Windstorm Deductibles

Over the past several years, Insurance Companies have used different ways of handling homes insured close to the water. Some Companies have even pulled out of the homeowners business on Long Island. Fortunately, our Companies have not. What we are seeing more and more of are companies adding windstorm or hurricane deductibles to their insured's homeowner policies.

We at NEEFUS-STYPE AGENCY INC., want to make you aware that your policy MIGHT have this type of deductible. Since hurricane season has started, we want you to understand what this could mean to your coverage. Most Companies are writing a hurricane deductible which could be 1%, 2% or 5% of the value of your home. The Deductible would come into effect depending on the wind speed of the hurricane. There are other factors that could also trigger the deductible, but the wind speed is most common. Following are examples of what kind of deductible clauses that you might or could have in the future.

If your dwelling is insured for $150,000 plus a 1% Hurricane deductible, your deductible would be calculated as follows.

1% x $150,000 = $1,500 deductible

A 2% and 5% deductible would be calculated similarly.

2% x $150,000 = $3,000 deductible
5% x $150,000 = $7,500 deductible

We strongly urge you to review your homeowner's policy to verify your Hurricane/Windstorm deductible amount.

At Neefus-Stype Agency Inc., we want you to understand your policy, not just pay the premiums. If you are unsure or want to confirm what (if any) deductible that you have, please call us at 631-722-3500. We are always there to serve you.
