Steps to take prior to a flood:

  1. Make an itemized list of personal property with approximate purchase dates or age. It will help us to settle your claim quickly and efficiently. Keep this information in a safe place with the insurance policy.

  2. Learn the safest route from home to high ground.

  3. Keep sandbags, plastic sheeting and plywood on hand to protect your property.

  4. Have a portable radio, flashlight and extra batteries on hand.

Steps to take during a flood:

  1. Listen to your radio and follow all instructions for your area. 

  2. Avoid flooded roads and don't walk through flood waters.

IF TIME PERMITS:

  • Turn off all utilities at the main power switch and close the main gas valve. 

  • Move all valuables to upper floors.

  • Fill bathtubs, sinks and jugs with clean water in case regular supplies are contaminated.

  • Board up windows or protect them with storm shutters.

  • Bring in outdoor objects that could be swept away, like lawn furniture/ornaments, tools, and garbage cans.

IF EVACUATING BY CAR, FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

  • Stock car with nonperishable food, water, blankets and extra clothing.
  • Keep the gas tank at least half full.
  • Don't drive over flooded roads.
  • If your car stalls in a flooded area, abandon it as soon as possible.
